AI assistants (MCP)
Use the released terminology in Claude, ChatGPT and other AI tools.
AI assistants such as Claude or ChatGPT, and AI-enabled coding tools, can look up the terminology directly. The database offers an MCP server for this (Model Context Protocol, an open standard AI tools use to connect to external data sources). The assistant then translates TUM terms with the released designations instead of making them up.
Like the JSON API, access is read-only and serves released entries only.
Connecting
The server lives at /mcp on this website, e.g. https://<this-address>/mcp.
No sign-in is needed.
- Claude Code:
claude mcp add --transport http tum-terminology https://<this-address>/mcp - Claude (web/desktop), ChatGPT and others: add a custom connector or MCP server with this address in the settings (transport "Streamable HTTP").
What the assistant can do with it
| Tool | Purpose |
|---|---|
translate_term |
Translate a term; the preferred designation comes first. |
search_terminology |
Search like on the website, including definitions and notes. |
get_concept |
One concept in full, in all languages. |
list_languages |
The available languages. |
list_domains |
The subject fields a search can be narrowed to. |
Every answer includes the entry's address on this website, so a translation can be checked. If a term is not in the database, the server says so explicitly.
Usage limits
The same limits apply as for the JSON API (60 requests per minute and IP address by default). One call returns at most 10 concepts, or up to 50 if the assistant asks for more.
